2019 Community Events
Our mission of impacting and changing lives extends beyond the work we do in our credit union branches. We are passionate about helping our community and committed to making Detroit a wonderful place to live and work.
The Children's Center
The Children’s Center leads the way in working with children who struggle with behavioral, emotional, educational, intellectual and developmental challenges or may have experienced trauma. They aim to treat the whole child, looking at more than a single issue to provide the best, most comprehensive integrated care.
On February 18, 2019 our entire staff participated in a Team Enrichment Day where we participated in a team building exercise to support The Children's Center of Detroit. We stuffed and built more than 30 animal friends for Detroit children in foster care. Our team also collected in-kind donations to support The Children's Center Boutique: a gently used clothing closet, food pantry and resource area, generously run and stocked by volunteers. The boutique serves over 250 families per month, who shop free of charge for items their households need.
Ronald McDonald House
In July, 1DCU team members prepared breakfast for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House of Detroit. Many of the families do not have the time or energy to prepare a healthy meal for themselves, as they spend most of their time at the hospital with their sick child. We included lots of love in the ingredients as we prepared a variety of omlette bites, muffins and mixed fruit!
My Neighborhood Mobile Grocery: Gleaners Community Food Bank
My Neighborhood Mobile Grocery (MNMG) is a nutrition-focused pop-up grocery that provides families and individuals who have limited access to affordable, healthy foods with a new shopping option within their communities. In August, 1DCU team members were personal shoppers for LaBelle Senior Apartments and Gabrielle Senior Apartments in Highland Park!
Hood Camp
Hood Camp is a two-day outdoor survival camp for urban youth that takes place at Avalon Village in Highland Park, MI. Campers learn life skills ranging from gardening to fire safety, personal finance and how to stop bullying while enjoying crafts, games, songs and cookouts. 1DCU has been a proud sponsor of Hood Camp for many years. This summer, our team hosted a personal finance game to help campers learn smart money habits.
Focus:HOPE
Focus: HOPE is a Detroit-based, non-denominational, non-profit organization whose aim is to overcome racism and poverty by providing education and training for underrepresented minorities and others. One of their programs, Food for Seniors, provides low-income older citizens with monthly food packages and opportunities to "shop" for basic needs cost-free at their facility. Our team had a great time helping to package foods this October and assisting seniors with their shopping.
Gifts of Hope
Our holiday giving campaign, Gifts of Hope, raised $4,745.92 for local charities including the Michigan Veterans Foundation, Neighborhood Service Organization (NSO), The NOAH Project, and Genesis House II (part of Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries). The generosity of our members and staff allowed us to pack and deliver hundreds of personal care kits, blankets and gifts to help these important community organizations.
