Impacting and Changing Lives

About us

In 1935, we were formed as the Detroit Newspaper Industrial Credit Union, to serve people who worked in the newspaper industry. In the 1970s, we changed our name to be more inclusive of industries such as radio, television, printing, and publishing. We chose Communicating Arts Credit Union, the name most of us associate with our credit union. As other financial institutions fled Detroit, we expanded our scope to help fill the financial services gap. While we will never forget our roots, our focus has expanded to all Detroiters. Whether you live in Detroit, or Redford, or Grosse Pointe, or Highland Park—we carry the spirit of Detroit. We work here, we live here, we worship here, we volunteer here. We are all together, One Detroit.

Award Winning Financial Services Leader | Serial Entrepreneur | Public Speaker | Small Business Coach | Developer | CEO of Good Vibes Lounge

To be mentioned as an influential figure among the likes of some of these great folks is an honor. As a millennial that is connected to the city in many ways I am truly learning the power of influencing but more importantly the need for advocacy.

One Detroit Credit Union is a true inspiration in the industry. They are the epitome of what a credit union should be in that they live the mission and vision of what credit unions were founded on, serving those that can’t be served elsewhere…One Detroit should have awards named after them for what they have done for their members, employees, community and other credit unions.” - Allegan Credit Union CEO Kris Lewis on One Detroit. One Detroit Credit Union has been awarded the 2024 Outstanding Credit Union of the Year Award (Small-Asset Size) because of the credit union’s work with CDFI funds over the last 15 years. What the organization has done to not only spread funds to those in need, but also pave the way for other credit unions to participate and access CDFI funds is a great example of our movement’s collaborative approach to serving the underserved. In the early days of Larky, we were fortunate to work with a bright young intern. Unfortunately, he had zero exposure to credit unions. To help get our intern up to speed, I reached out the CEO of One Detroit Credit Union to see if he would spend a few minutes with us. We ended up spending the day with him touring multiple branches, meeting the team, and talking with members. By the end of that day, our intern had learned the context that would help him understand why we do what we do. It was amazingly kind of the CEO to spend the time with us. Since that day, I have come to learn that this type of care and collaboration is in the DNA of One Detroit. They work every day to help their community prosper. I’m honored that Larky will now be a part of that. Thank you for your partnership.
